Summary

Spend your Spring Semester helping to organize and empower NYC’s LGBT Seniors and their allies.  Stonewall Community Development Corporation (Stonewall CDC) is seeking an intern for the spring 2019 semester. The intern reports to the program manager and collaborates with the executive director and other staff as appropriate. Stonewall CDC is working to ensure that older LGBTQ adults in New York City have access to affordable welcoming housing and related health and mental health services.

Scope of Duties

Our latest project Stonewall Village NYC is an online community organizing website that will provide resources designed to enable LGBTQ seniors to maintain their independence, connect with affordable housing opportunities and join the movement to create LGBTQ-welcoming senior housing. We are seeking outgoing individuals to provide support with onboarding seniors to the platform and helping them master the technology.

The intern:

  • will be responsible for researching, assessing and compiling, articles, services and organizations.

  • will assist with administrative tasks as needed.

  • will receive extensive training across a wide variety of topics.

  • will attend outreach events throughout the city including some weekends.

  • will work, one on one, with senior clients via phone and in-person.

  • will work to generate enthusiasm that will get the senior to return to the site on their own.

  • will document feedback and be responsible for relaying this information to the Community Manager.

  • will work with older adults with varying levels of computer proficiency, bolstering their computer confidence, while connecting them with supportive services, the community at large and each other.

 

Qualifications

  • Interns must be familiar with both OS and PC operating systems.

  • Interns should be able to navigate unfamiliar websites with ease.

  • Interns must be good listeners. 

  • Interns must have strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Interns must be problem solvers.

  • Interns must be comfortable working with LGBTQ clients in a predominantly LGBTQ office setting

 

Characteristics

  • Interns must be very patient, understanding and conduct themselves courteously. Experience with seniors a plus, but not required.

  • Interns must maintain a compassionate and easy-going disposition.

  • Interns should be sociable and outgoing as much of the work is one on one based.

  • Interns must be able to work collaboratively.
